Prof. Dr. U. S. P. Shet |
Prof. U. S Premananda
Shet graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Indian
Institute of Technology Madras in 1967, and obtained
M.Tech and Ph.D in Combustion and Propulsion, also
from IIT-Madras. He joined as Teaching Faculty at
I.I.T Madras during 1972 in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering attached to the
Thermodynamics and Combustion Engineering (TDCE)
Laboratory. After superannuating in September 2006
with over 35 years of teaching and research career
at IIT Madras, he is presently re-employed as
professor in the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering.
Combustion Engineering, Thermodynamics and
Propulsion are his fields of major scientific
interest. He taught PG level courses viz.,
Fundamentals of Combustion and Combustion Technology
and at UG level, Thermodynamics and Combustion and
Propulsion. His research interest includes: premixed
combustion, flame stabilization, swirl combustion,
Laser based measurements in flames, design of gas,
liquid and solid fuel burner systems, control of
combustion generated emissions and noise in
industrial burners, and Utilization of Solar Energy.
He has guided several students for the Ph. D, M.S
and M.Tech degree in the area of combustion and
published over 120 papers in reputed Journals,
National and International conferences. He received
Sir C. V. Raman Award for the Best Paper titled
“Combustion Noise of LPG Free Jet-Flames form A
Nozzle-Mix Swirl Burner” contributed to the Journal
of Acoustic Society of India (1992).
Prof. Shet had been a recipient of
Commonwealth Scholarship at the University of
Salford, England, U.K, (1973-76) and
Research Fellowship at
CNRS-CRCCHT, Orleans, France (1989-90) for carrying
out research in the area of premixed
turbulent combustion. He performed Rayleigh
scattering measurements of density fluctuations in
premixed turbulent flames at CNRS-CRCCHT during
1989-1990. He developed a Low-NOx Burner as part of
Indo-German Project (1998-2000) at the
Engler-Bunte-Institut, University of Karlsruhe,
Germany. He offered an advanced course in Combustion
Engineering (Theory, Applications and Measurements)
to Ph. D students at the Royal Institute of
Technology, Stockholm, Sweden during May-June 2000.
He is actively engaged in consultancy and sponsored
projects for several agencies.
Prof. Shet is a member of Academies and Professional
Bodies: Fluid Power Society of India, Indian Society
for Technical Education, The National Society of
Fluid Mechanics & Fluid Power and Aeronautical
Society of India. He has been a member of The
Combustion Institute, Indian Section (CI-IS) since
1969 and served holding various positions as
officer-bearer of the CI-IS. He got elected as the
Chairman for two tenures (1994-1995 and 1995-1997).
Presently, he is the Vice-chairman of the CI-IS.
